Jean-Noël Maran receives the 2021 COPL Tribute Award for his outstanding contribution to the field of photonic optics

It was on the occasion of the virtual Symposium which took place on January 11 that the director of the COPL, Sophie LaRochelle, recognized the exceptional career of this former doctoral student in joint supervision of Université Laval and the ENSSAT.

Mr. Maran, who is originally from France, did his master's and doctoral studies in electrical engineering at Laval University in the laboratories of the Center for Optics, Photonics and Lasers. He began his research career at the Laser Research Institute in South Africa and at the Optoelectronics Research Center in the United Kingdom. He then returned to Quebec in 2008 to join Coractive as a project manager and then as director of innovation.

In his speech, the recipient of the award humbly summarized his journey in 3 points that can inspire more than one; curiosity as a passion, effort rather than work and a bit of luck.

Mr. Maran is now President and Chief Executive Officer of Coractive. A Quebec company founded in 1998, specializing in the design and manufacture of fiber optics, in addition to offering a range of fiber lasers to customers in the industrial, telecommunications, detection (LiDAR), medical and scientific fields.
